I have been looking for a nice Coin of this issue (well centered with complete inscriptions and, especially, a finely depicted Galley) for some time and Ron Bude (Roman Lode) came through for me. There are several stylings and configurations for the Galley on these coins (London and “C” Mint issues) - please post any pics you have. RIC V (2), Allectus, Quinarius, No. 55: IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG ........................................ VIRTVS AVG ..... (Galley) Q L in reverse exergue. Allectus "Q" coin issue - The reverse depicts a Roman galley - symbolic of the dominant sea power emphasized by the Usurper Augusti of secessionist Britain Cuirassed, radiate, bust London Mint. 3.8 gm.
I still haven't found a Allectus yet and I collect Roman emperors. That's a nice one for a collection.
Allectus "Q" coins issues are cool to collect !! And yours is a beautiful example James I only have a regular issue to show though Allectus, Antoninianus Camulodunum mint IMP C ALLECTVS PF I AVG, Radiate and draped bust of Allectus right LAETIT AVG, Laetitia standing left. Great coin. I'm in the market for an affordable "Q C" version of this coin, like Doug's. I want a Colchester mint because Colchester/Camelodunum was thought to be one city upon which the composite Arthurian legend of Camelot was based. It's too much to say that Camelodunum=Camelot, but one argument holds that medieval writers might have romanticized a comparatively sophisticated late Roman city as an ideal seat of government, and Camelodunum was one part of the myth making.
These ships also allow a lot of collecting by variation. I hope some noticed my coin had a different reverse legend than the OP coin. Some ships have sailors. Some have waves below. Some even have a large victory standing on deck. For some reason I have never been driven to seek out others but I would not mind having a ML coin with some ship differences and the Virtus legend.
Well, I didn’t know that Gavin. Thank you. My oldest great-granddaughter will be thrilled with that information - it just might get her interested in collecting Ancient coins!
