How exactly did you come by these?

They all look fake to me. They all have the same patination and look to them. There is one in particular that screams out `fake'. I won't say more than that.

Why don't you put all the phtos in one post? That way it would be easier for all of us to see all of the coins.

    I agree with Ian.
I have several Greek coins from this period and no two are as perfectly struck and have exactly the same brownish patina. These are almost certainly reproductions, although very good ones!

My thought exactly - so I did it :)

Satootoku, what are your thoughts? One or two of them appear to be authentic, like the one of Alexander that has a lot of wear and uneven edges, but it seems as though if one is a reproduction, they might all be.

David Sears has written several books covering things I don't know about ancients, and he's only brushed the surface, but I certainly respect Ian's judgment about them.

The rims, and regular circular shape of the third one really don't match my understanding of ancients and the way they should look.

Hey please help me. I don't know much about coins. Specially about ancient coins. These were discovered by grave diggers in Macedonia and are not Greek but Macedonian. There is one from Amintha who was one of the first macedonian kings. Please help me with some useful informations. I have allready sold few of them and I didn't received any complaints about being fake. But I belive that they are very rear and that the selling price was too low. I don't want to make the same mistake again. And please don't be mad at me I'm not trying to make fun of you with some fake coins. I realy need your help. Thanks.
I couldn't put all of them in one post because of their size.

I'm not sure i've got you right here.

Are you saying that you acquired these straight from grave diggers? If not, my question was how you came across these.

I'm sorry if I sound cynical, but i've come across many such stories of a friend of a neighbours second cousins uncle (twice removed) who just so happened to dig up coins next to the outhouse that are ever so rare, (perhaps five or six known examples known before their truly amazing find)....and all for the amazingly reasonable price of....?

These coins claim to be from different time periods and different locations in the greek world. If they were dug up from a grave in Macedonia (and were genuine), I suspect that the Macedonian government would be more than interested to learn of you (or anyone else) selling them off.

As it is, it looks like they don't dig them up as old as they used to do. I have 99.999 % certainty that at least one of these is a modern fake....and if it came with the rest, then the grave it came from isn't any older than me.

Perhaps I am being to harsh?

I think not, but the best thing you can do is get them authenticated. Once you have done so, if there are indeed any genuine items there Ii would be pleased to personally give you any and all the information you require. Deal?

Thanks for your fast responce. The coins came directly from grave diggers and also known here as sportists (treasure hunters). They dont have computers and interned and have difficulty in selling them. You guess what my role is. We have problems with our government, because the law says that the finders can keep only 10 % of the value estimated by them. (By the way 90 % of our government members are also sportists but all they find doesnt go in our nationall museums, but goes in the hands of private collectors all over the world.) So you know why I wouldnt want our gouverment to have anything with this. The grave diggers have also found some other stuff like weapons, jewelry and pottery, but since this is coin talk forum I will not bother with them. Our country has rich history and has many known and unknown locations with antiqs. Well known secret is that the NATO forces digged up large amount of gold (over 10 000 kg) in coins and other items at a location on the Macedonian Kosovo border. Please tell me which one of them did you recognised as a fake. I need that information because I need to know if I have been manipulated. The coins didn't came only from one digger (one of them might not be honest with me).You might be right. I'm only trying to find out the truth. Have you ever seen coins like this? I will do as you instructed me? I'll try to get them authenticated. But that will be hard because I don't know anyone besides the people in the Macedonian national museum who can do that. (Honestly I suspect that even they can tell that if the coins are fake.) So the information I need the most at the moment is Are there any other (same) coins. I hope that you will keep your word about helping me after I will have them authenticated. I could send you photos of other stuff if you are interested.
    Thanks a lot.

There are plenty of dangerous fakes out there and many people have been suckered into buying them thinking they are getting a bargain. These people are in for a shock when it comes tiome to sell them again...when they have to waken up to the reality that they have fakes worth only about $5 each.

Your government should change its laws so that people are encouraged to turn in bona fide `finds'. As it is, I cannot and will not encourage you to break the laws of your own country. On this occasion I suspect very strongly that you are (either wittingly or unwittingly) marketing fakes into the coin collecting community.

Giving you the benefit of any doubt I would suggest that you contact a reputable auction house in the west such as Rauch, or CNG for authetication. If they believe the coins to be authentic they will say so and probably offer you all the details and values you would need for selling them on. They wouldl also probably offer to buy them from you for a lot more than you would get trying to persuade collectors to `take a chance'. Other than that, I am not prepared to offer any advice or information on any of these pieces.

Thanks for your reply Ian. I'm very grateful. The last thing I want to do is to market fakes. But I'm positive that most of them are original. So I was wondering since I don't have your experience and knowledge if you could help me locating the fake coins. Or at least share with me your thoughts about which of them you suspect are fake. I need these information because I have to reconsider working with some of finders. That should be my priority. I was wondering if you could help me get in contact with the auction houses you mentioned. This would spare me a lot of time. I respect you and your opinion very much. Thanks for the help.

Post your images to them and take it from there. As i've already said, personally I am not prepared to discuss the specifics of any of these items with you. At least, not at this point.
