Alexander III AR Drachm. Kolophon mint??

    I am trying to identify this coin, but it just does not match anything I've found, so far and it looks a little off. Also, I have not been able to take a better picture yet, but I wonder if the dark spots are base metal coming through.

    I would say it is indeed from Kolophon/Colophon, in the early posthumous period, and that the type is either Price 1768 or Price 1769. Go to this Wildwinds page and scroll down to see all the info/images for both 1768 and 1769, then decide:

    I don't think the black spots are worrisome. If you are concerned the spots may be signs of it possibly being a fourrée -- I think you are safe.

    Curious: What is it that makes you suspect that the coin is a "little off"?

    It seems to be a decent example.

    The Lyre emblem doesn't look like any of the examples and I just weighed it at 3.6 grams, which is lite for the type.
