My 3 winnings from the Nov. 7 Aureo & Calico sale of Roman Republican denarii have arrived, and I must say it was worth the wait. I’ve posted images of these coins before but now I can post my own images which I believe are more representative of the coins in hand. To keep this concise, I’ll cover only one coin per post. First is the Caduceus issue, RRC 60/1a which is among the most crude, but also the most recognizable style of the early denarii. The issue is also found without the Caduceus symbol but with this identical style, RRC 60/1b. The anonymous coins are very rare. A small subset of the Apex and Hammer series is also found with this style, RRC 59/1b, suggesting these issues came from the same mint assigned by Crawford to an unknown mint in central Italy. It is a scarce issue generally found in terrible condition. This coin is from the Goodman collection sold in the late 90’s by CNG across 5 auctions including Triton I where this coin was sold as part of that collection. It has fresh, lightly toned surfaces and is complete but for about half of the obverse border.
Glad to hear those finally came in! That's a really wonderful example of the type and with excellent provenance as well. Congrats!
This coin was a last minute scratch off my bid list for no good reason but budget. I'm glad it found an excellent home. Congratulations on this lovely example!
