ok... I'm thinking about roaming in this direction, but I don't know about these, too much. Since I collect world coins, do the rings that come with these squish down to fit variances in sizes? I know it's a silly questions, but I'm going to have to buy them online, and I have never seen them actually used. Currently, I am using the saf-t-flips, because they aren't supposed to contain any PVC, but with all the talk I've heard, it doesn't seem like it's probably very good storage. I will be sad to see my binders go, because I love taking them out and browsing through them... but maybe all my browsing is harming them, given how they are currently stored, and causing wear.
I like airtites. Have a few foreign coins in them, but not sure just how far the material would squish down to make adjustments. I am hoping to find some sort of three-ring binder pages which would take my airtites so that I could have both the coins well protected and be able to display them as well.
The rings in the AirTites do not squish down. They are sized to fit specific coins. They serve a dual purpose - they come in white or black and because of this they can accent the coin and make it stand out - it just looks good ! I prefer the black myself, especially for gold. But the white looks quite nice with silver. The other purpose is they help protect the coin and hold it securely in the holder. The best thing to do is to determine the size of the coins you own that you wish to place into AirTites. Then just purchase the appropriate sizes. And if you don't know the sizes - then my favorite place to purchase AirTites ( also the cheapest I have found ) provides you with a size chart that you can print out at home JP's Corner
Rick, I'm new to the forum a crossover from Coin World. I don't understand why you think that the Kointain Saf-T-Flips aren't a good way to store coins. I have been using them for years and have had no problems at all. As a matter of fact I found them to be the best way to go. Your coins are even protected from the PVC problem the pages have. catman steve
catman - The reason is because most folks don't do what you do with coins in flips. Most folks just place the coin into the flip and leave it at that. This allows the coins to move around inside the flip and rub against it. Over time - this can have an effect and produce something akin to cabinet friction on the coin. Where with properly sized AirTites - the coin is held immobile and there is no rub or sliding around.
Hey Doug, In nearly 45 years of collecting I have never seen damage caused by movement in a flip(disregard PVC). Many have claim this happens but none has shown me a coin. Now if your talking about needing a 300x glass to see it then I'm not overly concerned. The cabinet wear I have seen many times however. catman
