So, I purchased some airtites recently to put some of my nicer raw coins in. This included a few for ASEs. When I put one of my ASE's in the airtite, it was a very tight fit. So tight, it would be difficult to remove the coin (I tried but didn't want to break the holder or damage the coin). This is a direct fit holder. Is this normal for these holders? I assumed they would fit but the coin could easily be removed. Am I mistaken?
they make bigger ones for ase. i bought one in a tight holder once and i had to use a screwdriver to get it out.
Get the ones that have foam rings. Much easier to work with. I've gotten many coins stuck in the air tites that don't have foam rings.
Id avoid the black rings though, i think it was Chris but im not sure, who said that they leave black residue on the rim of coins.
I use the direct fit ones and they always go in really easy for me. Never needed to remove one from the holder.
I like the ones with the foam rings too. I've never had a problem with those. Maybe your direct fit ones are a millimeter or two off.
I had some morgans in a black ring as well before, never had problems, but since hearing that around here and seeing pictures of it, i just use white rings. Plus IMO they look better.
Richie: Be sure to use the 40.6mm airtites made specifically for the ASE as opposed to 40mm airtites. The direct fit can be tough to open. If so, just use a hair dryer on it for a minute or so. As a dentist, I am sure you have some torture tool in your arsenal that can help you pry it open as well. :smile TC
The problem with the direct fit model is two-fold. For one the coins themselves can vary slightly in size. And the holder can vary slightly in size. Either by itself can create the problem of a too tight fit, but when combined that problem can be made even worse. The easy solution is to use the ring type. And contrary to any reports no ring has ever been the cause of any marks or toning on any coin. The rings, both black and white, are made of 100% inert materials. The rings are no more capable of causing marks or toning on a coin than the holder itself is.
