I really don't think so. Black ring airtites are safe and very good looking. I use a lot of them.

No, both the white and black ring inserts are made of inert material.

I use them...I like airtites all together and I like the rings...it just when you collect so many different sizes it requires many different combos.

I have seen examples of the black insert toning coins. I only use the white one.

I am suggesting there is ancedotal evidence that the black inserts tone coins.

I have seen an example of modern proofs that had apparently toned from the black inserts (they were not my coins, and it was at a show), and I have also spoken to a collector who told me the same thing -- that the black insert tones coins. I seem to recall reading the same thing I was researching the topic a year or so ago -- but I was unable to find the post after a bit of searching.

I know there was enough of a question in my mind that I bought the white ones. YMMV...Mike

I have been using black ring airtites since around 1999 and they haven't toned. There may be knocks off on the market that cause toning. Something to consider.

The person with the toned coins could have incorrectly assumed that it was the black ring that caused the toning, when in reality the toning was caused by something entirely different.

Both the white and black rings are made of the very same inert material. If a material is inert it cannot cause toning.

I had coins stored in black ring holders for over 10 years and never had a problem. To this day, my son has 2000 Sackies stored in black ring holders that I bought direct from the mint for him - no toning or discoloration at all after 7 years. On a Sacky - quite possibly the coin made of the most reactive metal the mint has ever used - tone free.

    That speaks volumes to me.

I do not have that many years experience with Air-tites, but it’s my understanding that the inside ring material, regardless of color, is called Volara, and is totally inert.

“Our Rings are made of an inert cross linked polyethylene and serve a couple of purposes; it secures the coin in the holder, creates a barrier against air contamination and in the end presenting an attractive border to accent the coin.”- Welcome to Air-Tite Holders, Inc.

“The choice holder of numismatic archivists. All holders are manufactured using acrylic plastic with a non-yellowing agent, producing a two-piece snap together friction fit cover and base. Rings are produced by cross linked polyethylene (trade name "Volara"), which is totally inert. None of the components contain any PVC. The holders are highly durable and scratch resistant.”- AirTite Coin Holders, Brent- Krueger

something else to consider about airtites...............they're not COMPLETELY AIR TIGHT. unfortunately neither are the tpg slabs. i can't understand why a holder can't be invented that truly is sealed from the elements..........maybe we need to throw this out to our friends at NASA. it's well known that they test many many ideas and develop solutions for problems of products of all kinds while in space. in fact if it weren't for them we wouldn't have many products that we now have and take for granted.

Isn't AirTite an AirTite? The reason I am asking is because, one web site sells an AirTite with either black/white Ring for $.49 and another sells the same AirTite with Ring for $1.05 per piece, to hold Morgan Dollars (38 mm size). I also recall on another thread, GDJMSP indicated an AirTite for about $.71 (?).

The above represents a major price difference. That price difference led me to wonder if they are the same AirTites or the cheaper one is not made by the same company. I, like most of you, would like to purchase a genuine product to protect our coins at a reasonable price.
