I'm looking for a good holder for some coins. I tried Koinains but don't really like them, too difficult to get the top over the bottom. I was wondering if anyone uses the Airtite Direct Fit holders and what you think of them. I would also appreciate any suggestions on a good, not overly expensive holder. Thanks
I like my Airtite’s but if you want to take the coin out it’s a real pain. I’ve put most of small coins in airtite’s. They stack nicely in my safety-deposit box.
I prefer the regular airtites to the direct fit. The direct fit might look better but I don't like the way they contact the coins.
I love my airtites with the square holder and box. I can ensure the protection of the coin while having it in a little display holder The display holder fits in nicely in the box that has spaces for each coinbox to be fitted into for organizing by date/type and which by the way fits in nicely into a safety-deposit box.
I am currently looking at the air-tites to start holding my coins. Is anyone aware of any damage from the direct fits? I see Cloudsweeper99 who doesn't like the way they touch the coins, but does that cause any damage? I would rather not spend the extra money on the rings unless people think they are worth it. Thanks.
Welcome! The direct fit's, hold the coins by the rim. That is unless you have an under size or odd shaped coin. In that case, air tites may hold the coin by the faces or it could be loose and scratch the coin. So it’s not perfect for everything.
All coin holders touch the coin someplace - they have to. But as long as the coin does not fit loosely and just rattle around there is no harm to the coin. Even if it did rattle around, unless you shook it like a paint shaker I doubt it would do anything to the coin.
That is exactly why I only use the ring style airtites. Added protection if dropped and the coin can be a little oversized and still fit into the holder (try that with a direct fit). If you collect other coins, tokens, challenge coins, etc. then the ring type are a must because of these items different diameters and thickness's that always seem to just not fit good in the direct fit holders.
as I'm planning on using these for standard coins (Franklins, SBA, Kennedy), I'll probably be alright with the direct fits then. thanks for the input.
I have both the ring-style and direct fit airtite for a few of my better coins. I prefer the direct fit as it better presents the coin and if your coin has edge lettering (like my '38 Nazi 2 RM coin) you can view it as well. Most of my coins fit perectly into the direct fit style and are held by the rim. Only coin that doesn't fit is my 1834 capped bust dime. Since it's a little larger than a modern dime, i had to put it into a holder for a penny, for which it is slightly undersized. It does move slightly, but i don't really shake the holder like a rattle can. Every other coin fit perfectly. I even bought the storage box and card for the holders. I don't really like keeping some of my coins separate from my 2x2 holders in a 3-ring binder, but it offers better protection if you want to take them out, view them and show friends.
