Met with a great friend of mine, @ancientcoinguru, as well as her husband at the last FUN Show. Lotta fun meeting other CT people also. She was kind enough to give me a B'day present during the show. I FINALLY got around to taking a quick pic so that I can post this little guy... or little GUYS... Her note to me: Bulls were sacred in Minoan culture, with bulls a symbol of strength, wisdom, self-respect, fertility, and good health. This is cool... how many times do you get to see THREE BULLS on ONE coin? ESPECIALLY, as small as this one! TRIPLE Luck! CARIA, Hydissos or Chersonesus 450 BCE AR hemiobol 0.3, 6.7mm Obv: Forepart of bull to l. Rev: Two foreparts of bulls confronting Ref: SNG von Aulock 6669; SNG Keckman 911-912; SNG Tuebingen 3327-3329 Have FUN! Post your HemiObols, Tiny coins, BULLS (anyone have 3 on a coin?) or whatever...
I believe mine is a bit earlier because of the incuse square reverse. 0.13g For lack of a better answer I am calling it a hemitartemorion. I posted it here last year when I ran across a dealer with a large collection of tiny coins. I spent way too much on little coins that day. I will see him again in three weeks but have no idea if he has any itty bitties left.
Fun, @Alegandron!! Uncertain, Caria AR Tetartemorion, Circa 500-450 BC Obverse: Confronted foreparts of two bulls. Reverse: Forepart of bull right within incuse square. References: SNG Kayhan 949ff Size: 6mm, 0.13g cf: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1943222
Great coin @Alegandron! It’s amazing how much they were able to fit on those tiny ones. Here are a couple of larger bulls. Julian II, AE1, Arles circa 360-363, 26mm., 10.49g. Pear-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust/ Bull standing r.,above, two stars; in r. field, eagle, standing r. on wreath, holding another wreath in its beak. In exergue SCONST. RIC 320. Mysia, Parion, 4th century BC. Hemidrachm (13 mm, 2.46 g). Facing gorgoneion/ Bull standing left, head turned to right. ΠA-PI
FANTASTIC @dougsmit ... I really like that one. I have become a big fan of tiny coins, having several Tetartemorions, or under 0.15g coins myself. Would be very interested in seeing your Tetartemorion captures from that dealer.
Thank you for the Bday wishes. Minor milestone with this one. I really like your Syracuse Bulls! Got one facing right to butt heads with yours! Sicily Syracuse Hieron II 275-269 BC AE 15 Persephone Bull RIGHT rare
