Working at a school I have had the oppurtunity to share my collection with a few of the kids that have shown interest. One of them I have even given a nice starter collection which he has built on to the point where he has a nice one of his own. Any how enough of the back story. His parents were doing some remodleing in their home and found a copy of the Aug 1967 U.S. Numisnews, in the wall(no coins though). Just thought I would share one of the better coin adds from 44 years ago. Hope this comes out the file was a little large and I had to adjust a little.
Wonder if any of them had been dipped. Of course that might have been before it was acceptable - not really sure when that started.
I have some old coin related papers and books also, and they really are interesting to browse through. The values from years ago are fun to compare with today's. If you only had a time machine you could make a killing. I have a small collection of Fort Worth, TX dealer B. Max Mehl's "Star Catalogues" that he issued for years listing the prices he would pay for coins. In the 1934 edition he was paying from .10 to .50 cents for 1877 IHC (I guess these were prices for average circulated thru Unc examples). A 1913 Liberty Head Nickel was getting a "whopping" $50.00, and a 1793 Chain Cent $2.50 to $10.00. Of course all values are relative to their time, but still it's fun to compare. Bruce
Great pic! Anybody wanna take the deal on the lower left? I'll trade you 2 rolls of F+ Morgans for a BU $20 gold. Gimme a shout! Ha Ha Ha
Here are a few interesting prices from the 1960 "Blue Book" published by Whitman" > The most expensive Oregon Trail was the 1933-D at $4.50 in UNC. > The 1935 PDS Texas Centennial Set was valued at $5.50 in UNC. > The Antietam was expensive at $22.50 in UNC. > But, the Stone Mountain was only $1.25 in UNC. > The five most expensive UNC Morgan Silver Dollars were: 1893-S - $175.00 1903-O - $150.00 1895 PF - $125.00 1898-O - $75.00 1889-CC - $30.00 > The total cost to purchase an 1890-CC, 1891-CC, 1892-CC & 1893-CC would be $11.50 in UNC. Of course, we all know that the prices quoted in the book are always too high. Chris
Not in the blue book, they are typically too low. And remember those are supposed to be dealer BUYING prices.
