Show both sides for us to admire. I wonder if the large pits were caused by corrosion or removal of mineral deposits.
Julius-G => man, I love your coin photos .... => they all have great eye appeal (I'm a total fan of coin photos shot "in-hand" ... it gives you a real feeling of what the actual coin looks like)
I have a fondness for Aelius' portraits. Maybe it's the scragly beard that seems to translate well on coins. Here is an Aelius denarius from my collection, ex A. Lynn Collection.
Aelius (Caesar) Coin: Bronze As L AELIVS CAESAR - Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right TR POT COS II, PANNO-NIA S-C - Pannonia standing right, head left, holding vexillum in right hand and pulling swath of drapery across legs with left hand Mint: Rome (137 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 11.50g / 24mm / - References: RIC II 1071 Cohen 25 Notes: Aug 16, 14 - Blue patina.
My only Aelius (well lucky enough to have one, anyway) is an early purchase from a few decades ago : Aelius, Denarius Rome mint, AD 137 L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head right TR POT COS II, Spes standing left holding flower and lifting skirt 3.25 gr Ref : Cohen # 55, RCV # 3977 Q
Here my two Aelius bronzes. Both heavily encrusted and/or corroded, but the portrait still shows nicely. Aelius. Caesar, AD 136-138. Æ Sestertius. Rome mint. Struck under Hadrian, AD 137. Obv: Bare head right Rev: Concordia seated left, holding patera in right hand, resting left elbow on a cornucopia which is affixed to the chair. RIC II 1057 AELIUS. Caesar, AD 136-138). As. Rome mint. Obv: L AELIVS CAESAR. Bare head right. Rev: TR POT COS II / PANNO - NIA / S - C. Pannonia standing left, holding vexillum and hem of dress. RIC 1071 (Hadrian). After almost 26 years collecting romans I still have not managed to add a silver Aelius to my collection. Got to try harder!
Certainly: AELIVS CAESAR / TR POT COS II S C Spes advancing left, holding flower and lifting skirt Sestertius, Rome 137 RIC 1055, Sear 3986 Me, too
