Hi everyone, it seems I am always asking advice but, when you do not know a lot, you need to do somthing. I started collecting the Presedenntial dollars, I buy 2 rolls 1P and 1D from the mint on subsription. I also buy BU coins, loose, 15 ea. P & D. I am putting sets together for my grandchildren and then I have some tubes I am filling anyway, my problem is with the mint sets.

Each roll comes in its own box so when the Madison's come out I will have 8 boxes with one roll each, they take up a lot of space and I can just imagine, in 4 or 5 years, I will need a huge wooden crate to store them in. Am I better off leaving them in the boxes or can I take them out of the boxes and put them in a tray or ammo box or somthing like that to conserve space?

I have not opened the Washington or Adams rolls, I do not know if I have errors or not, I live near Chicago, if that tell anyone anything about possibliities. I I keep them sealed in the original boxes does that add value, in case they are error coins?

In addition, I get 3 proof sets on subscription, 2 as just the dollar sets and one as a complete annual proof set, and of course I will be getting more of the Pres $'s with my mint set subscription this week.

For my Westward Ho nickels, the mint rolls came with 1p roll and 1d roll together in one box, I do not know why they could not do that with the Dollars.

Thanks in advance for your answers, I thoroughly enjoy reading the threads almost daily.

Well I don't have much advice other except next time I would check at the bank first to see if they have rolls of the presidential dollars since they can be traded for face value there. Many banks run out quick though like mine haha. Sorry for not helping much.

P.S. You sound like a very generous grandparent :)

There's two ways to look at this - one is the value aspect of the coins being in an unopened box. Yeah, there are people on ebay who will pay more for them, but you're not gonna get rich off of that "more". You might get a few bucks but that's about it. There are plenty more people who won't pay 1 dime more though.

The second way to look at it is this - that cardboard box is loaded with sulphur, and sulphur is harmful to the coins. For that matter, the paper the roll wrapper is made of is loaded with sulphur too. But I can understand someone wanting to collect original rolls.

So what to do ? Well, if it were me the first thing I would do is get rid of all those cardboard boxes. Then I would properly store the rolls. That means store them in a cool, dark and dry place where the temperature is as close to a constant as you can get. Store them is a sealed container of some kind with rechargable silica gel packs. Check on the packs regularly until you know how often to recharge them. Then do so religiously.

About the only thing you can do that is better for the coins would be to remove them all from the rolls, place each one in either an Air-Tite holder or an Intercept Shield holder and store them the same as described above.

    And that's about it.

Wow that's some good advice, should I be doing this for my coins in 2x2s which i keep in a cardboard shoebox in a drawer?

Yes, everyone should properly store their coins.

Westward Ho nickels? Were those the ones with the Bunny Ranch in Nevada?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself! Back on topic, though. I would say keep all your coins in the original box. Presidential dollars are very common now, but everyone is opening their rolls to look for errors. 1999 State Quarter unopened rolls are now selling for a premium, even though they are one of the most hoarded coins in history. People like unopened rolls.

Thanks for the advice, much as I had expected, a very strong get them out of the boxes and rolls and an equally strong keep them in the boxes, they will be premium down the road.

Of course I am very interested in knowing wether I have error coins for either the GW or the JA coins, they are selling for a nice price, especially the JA naked edge. But, I think I will hold off, at least awhile to see what happens. I know I could buy the coins at face from the bank, but somehow I just feel that the coins directly from the mint with all of the packaging have some intrinsic value. Probably just another load, that I hope for but is just a pipe dream.

Of course I want to be generous with my grandchildren, who else, my wife? She will have enough she won't need the coins, at least I hope not, Maybe her cabanna boy will go throught the roll quicker than I would hope, ha ha.

Thanks again to all those who responded, you are very generous.
