Hello everyone. I used to collect coins as a child but haven't in quite some time. I recently got back into the hobby and collect lincoln cents and look for error coins (though i haven't had any luck and have trouble spotting them). I was wondering if anyone could recommend something to collect that would be too expensive. I am currently in college so i dont have a large budget to spend on my hobby but i still want a nice collection that is organized. As a child i mainly just got coins i thought looked cool or found interesting but i want to take a better approach this time. Also, i have heard people talking about roll searching and bag searching. I was wondering where people get these rolls or bags. I would assume the bank and not the "unsearched shotgun rolls" on ebay. However, are there some banks that are more willing to sell you large ammounts of coins and take them back after you search them. Like would i be better off going into a small local bank or a typical well known bank like wachovia or bank of america, or is there somewhere else? Thank you in advance for any information it is greatly appreciated. :smile

Welcome to Cointalk! First off invest in a Redbook (A Guide to United States Coins). I personally work on a very small budget (also paying for college!) and I just finished my type set of 1900's US coins in whatever grade I could afford (I'll upgrade later). If you are looking for varieties/errors, buy a Cherrypicker's Guide as well (available at most larger book stores). Good luck collecting!

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

It is probably best to start searching rolls by ordering them through the bank where you have your checking and/or savings account. Get to know the people who work at the bank. I've never had a problem ordering $500 boxes of halves or quarters, re-rolling them (my bank even supplies me with the wrappers for free) and then returning them to my bank. If re-rolling the coins isn't to your liking, then you also have the option of taking them to a CoinStar machine, but be prepared to pay a percentage for the use of it. Another option would be to see if there is a credit union in your area. Many credit unions have their own customer-operated change counting machines and the service is usually free to account holders. Good luck!

Thank for the information. So banks usually cant just sell the rolls to you you typically have to order them? How would i go about this just ask the teller to order X ammount of rolls of X type of coin? Sorry to be a bother

It depends on how many rolls you want at a time. As a rule, most banks will keep a supply for their own transactions and order boxes for their small business customers like convenience stores, but if your request means depleting their supply for daily transactions, they will probably require that you order them in advance. It usually only takes a couple of days for the bank to get the order.

I'm in college too, so I can give you a similar viewpoint.

I'm currently working on completing a dansco album of UNC and proof jefferson nickels. It's a great series to collect because 80% of them can be had for under $2 each. The most expensive would be about $15, and there is few of them. If I was you, I wouldn't be getting coins just to look for errors. It takes up a ton of time (free time can be hard to come by in college), kills the eyes, and you will lucky if you find anything. I just check the coins I buy for the collection for errors and thats all (I've found a DD washington quarter, and a quadruple die Kennedy). I've tried roll searching before, all banks will give you rolls of coins if you have an account there. The purpose is to look for silver and other older coins. It's time consuming and difficult to get anything good. I can easily name 100 better things to do with that time in college (all of them involve party).

Welcome to the forum. Ther eis a wealth of knowledge here and most everyone is willing ot share it with you. I order my boxes from from the bank. I have 3 differant bank accounts and I normally get rolls from two of them and take them to the coin counting machine at the third so I dont have to roll them and it is free to me.
Most banks will be happy to order you boxes of coins. Just make sure if you order them you go and pick them up because they tend to get mad if you dont and arent as willing to order for you next time,
Once again welcome and happy searching

I do go to UF. I'm not there now though, off for the summer. Where I live (St. Augustine) all the dealers are crooks, so I buy online. I also buy from coin shows. Make sure you don't miss the FUN show in July, its a pretty big one.

Oh, and try ebay, that's the only place I know of to get good deals on cheaper coins.

thanks! does anyone know anywhere else online other than ebay to buy coins. Also, would a bank typically have half dollar rolls on hand if i was to want to buy some. I have never seen a roll of half dollars because i have never really collected them. I dont know if a bank would have them on hand or if i would have to order them from the bank if i was to only get a small ammount say 1-5 rolls at a time. Thanks for any info :smile
