I was obviously asleep when the advertising popups started.
What happened and why? Maybe needed the revenue to keep the forum going?

I think you forgot to pay your yearly supporter membership fee o_O

That happened to me recently and as soon as I paid all the annoying advertisements disappeared for me.

Everyone who spends more than 10 minutes a day on this site should become a supporter. You just can't buy any better knowledge or camaraderie for a few bucks a year!

However, even though I am a supporter I could not find instructions on how to become one.

    To sign up:

    1) Click on your username (upper left corner of the screen).

    2) In the dropdown box that appears, click Personal Details (top of the left-hand column).

    3) On a desktop or laptop, you'll see a page with a column to the left. On a phone, you'll see a page with Your Account at the top. Tap on Your Account, and you'll see a menu appear.

    4) In that left-hand column (desktop) or drop-down menu (phone), you'll see a choice for Account Upgrades. That's where you can sign up to be a Supporter (or a Sponsor or a Dealer).

When this happens to me, it's because my Supporter subscription ran out, and I always sign back up.

If you weren't a Supporter before -- ads are served by third-party services, and they can change what they serve up without any consent or cooperation from CoinTalk. I strongly recommend becoming a Supporter. The alternative is to tolerate the ads (some of which can be quite intolerable), or to use an ad blocker, which means you're really sponging off Peter (the guy who pays to keep the site going, and gets whatever meager revenue those obnoxious ads produce).
