I’m not a Morgan collector(yet) nor do I have a Morgan in my small collect. But I do Believe if I was going to get my first I think it would be a CC.. nice score!!! ps. I’m scared of buying a Morgan because the lack of knowledge of identifying fakes...
I forgot to ask.... how does it feel??? Have you set it down yet!? When I get a new coin I look at it for hours and the next day too...
honestly mike i've been so busy today i only had a few minutes to enjoy it. i'm going to send it in to get graded but until then it will stay in the case it came in. i purchased from a very reputable dealer for a very fair price. i'm happy just to have one, even if it isn't in the best condition.
From what I see the reverse is really nice details and the obverse is is pretty good also but like I said it might be a fake in my eyes.. I really wish I have a lot more knowledge of Morgan’s. edit: not saying it fake!! Just meant I could tell you it is a fake!! Beautiful though!!
I don't see any major signs of it being a counterfeit. Don't be afraid to buy morgan dollars if you really want to. Once you've handled a certain amount of coins it gets easier to tell fakes. Also if you're buying online make sure it's a trusted dealer with a large sale history and high satisfaction rate.
If you want one that you can have confidence in, get one that's in a slab (PCGS, NGC, ANACS). Since one of my main collections is a type set, there is no way I can be savvy about all the different issues. So I buy coins in slabs.
Educate yourself from the web, books, CT, etc. But buying graded Morgans from a reputable dealer will eliminate virtually all of your worries. Just be extra careful with more expenisve Morgans and look up the NGC, PCGS, and/or CAC numbers to verify.
I have been reading a lot about since in joined CT. I have bought more books now than my whole adult life lol Shield and liberty head nickels. Bowers About 7 red books and a couple of quick look books
@HookFynn if you like Carson City Morgan’s, look to some of the GSA hoard Morgan’s that were auctioned by the government back in the 1970’s. Many of those are very fairly priced. And you get to enjoy the history of the Carson City mint as well as the history of the GSA auctions. The government put them into some attractive plastic that probably was one of the inspirations that developed into the TPG slabs.
why have it graded? mostly because i simply want to. but also because it's the centerpiece of my new collection. i'm from Nevada. my great grandfather had ALL of the CC collection and after his death it turned up missing. so it's also a tribute to him.
My first Morgan, bought when I was in my early teens, was a 78-CC, and I still have it today. It's an XF and still raw. I'm curious...were your grandfather's coins graded?
A complete or even partically-complete set of Carson City MSDs would be worth a nice sum of $$$. Turned up missing ? Hmmm.....
