acid wash?

    Sure looks like it to me that it has seen some time in some type of caustic bath . I can't see any other reason to look like it does . Maybe one of the CONECA people will chime in .

    What are the advantages/differences of/between caustic and acid?

    Either an acid bath or exposed to heat. I have seen both produce similar looking anomalies on coins.
