Acetone on a Shield Nickel

I was wondering if anyone on here has tried to remove PVC damage off a Shield Nickel by using acetone (or anything else). If so, what kind of success did it have? Does acetone work well on nickels?

The reason I wonder is that I am considering purchasing 1874 and 1875 Shield Nickels that are both AU with good color, but both have spots of PVC. The prices are about half of bid for regular AU pieces. I just wondered if the PVC would possibly come off easily without any negative effects.

    Any advice or comments??

    Thanks

Some people claim that acetone negatively affects copper/bronze, but there is a general consensus that it will not harm cu-ni.

The PVC will come off with an acetone bath, but whether there will be negative effects depends on what is under the PVC. If it has corroded the surface, removing it will just make the corrosion visible. On the other hand, not removing it guarantees that damage will occur if it hasn't already.

Bottom line, you pays you money and takes you choice. [IMG]

I used it on a V-nickel, came out good.
