Accuracy of coinvaluesonline.com? I found an auction for a 1999 D MS67 NY quarter with a buy now price of $70. According to coinvaluesonline.com the coin is worth $500 ! Did the seller make a mistake when putting the price on the coin, or is coinvaluesonline.com way off?
This is an example of the price guide being way, way off. It is not uncommon. ALL price guides are frequently extremely inaccurate and they should seldom be used to be honest. The single most accurate way to find out what any coin commonly sells for is to look at realized prices yourself. Yes - it requires a bit of work but not that much. If you use ebay a lot to buy your coins - then use ebay to check the prices. It's really easy - and it's the most accurate method. This is an example - Realized prices 1999 MS67 quarter Also be sure to make note of the auctions that closed with NO bids. These can often tell you more about what a coin is really worth than those auctions that did close with bids.
Thanks for the info. I messed up my previous post. Of course there is no 1999 NY quarter I meant the 2001 NY quarter. I modified the link and found a number of auctions for MS67 NY quarters.
One major problem with price guides is that they will use the highest price nationally known or advertised. Such price guides are often not updated to reflect current values. With each year, the first few ultra grade coins hit the market with high values, and subsequently, the values fall dramatically after more coins are certified. Auction prices are by far a great tool. Most dealers will use this tool for quick referrence along with the online version of the coin dealers newsletter.
