Hello all. I am newish to cointalk but have not had much time to do any hunting lately but did come across these 2 coins today. Not sure if they are anything special but still curious about a few things. Any help would be awesome.
    1. The 1996 p Mercury Dime with the discoloring. Is this what I have seen people call a rainbow? If so what causes it and is it worth holding on to or nothing special. I have also been keeping my eye out for ft and fb dimes. Is this a full torch or full band? The torch looks pretty solid if I am looking at the correct lines they are referring to. 0206172351a.jpg 0206172352.jpg 0206172351b.jpg

Ok and next I found a quarter which is a 2000-D Virginia.
The coin was almost put in the wrong pile because I thought the damage was from someone or something after it left the mint but after looking at it I can see it looks to be damage from the mint. In one of the craters you can see a lines or lettering on top of the damage.
    1. What type of error would this be called ?
    2. Is it anything special or just a common damaged coin? Any help is always greatly appreciated. 0206172355.jpg 0206172359b.jpg 0206172356.jpg 0207170000.jpg 0207170000b.jpg 0206172359b.jpg

Oh and I did find my first silver quarter in a bank roll today. A 1951. Horrible condition but still good find in my book.

Of course I have many others that I have looked up but can't figure them all out so they will be posted shortly.

All post mint damage there my friend. Nothing of consequence. The dime? Little value there as well.

Thanks Tommy. Well darn. I guess that's why they have forums like this. I'm learning. This is not always easy. I am possibly bouncing around to too many denominations. I have a 1970 penny I'm trying to find I will post in a few minutes if you are still on.

Yes it is. I'm having a blast. Ok here is a 1970 with what looks like a droopy 0 over a large 0. 14864496860161835276976.jpg 1486449725411311789660.jpg what do you think about this one? Another gutter ball?

Yeah, unfortunately. I'd say somebody was playing with pliers or the like. Maybe a screwdriver or a file possibly.

Wow. I don't understand some people but I was a kid once. Thanks for the help. I have a lot more. I will get a good pile together and post a few more tomorrow. Thanks again.

If you look at the VA quarter, notice how the metal around the gouge has been displaced and pushed up along the edges. This is a good indicator that the damage happened after it left the die. If it was die damage or a damaged planchet, it would not be possible for the displaced metal to survive the minting process.

The 1970-D is caused by a coin rolling machine. When it crimps the end of the roll, it can cause circular gouges if set too deep. In some case it won't contact the field but it will hit the last digit of the date. I've seen a lot of these. There is nothing in the minting process that would cause that type of error

Thanks a lot Hoopster. That's the answer I was looking for. Tommy was great and I appreciate any and all responses but how you explained why its not mint damage helped. I need to ask more questions and more detailed from now on so I'm not just getting answers but learning for the next situation. I have several books and I use a Variety Vista as well as The Lincoln Cent Resource as references. Are there any other good ones you recommend that kind of walk you through the process of how and why things are?

Sorry, but I can't recommend any specific sites or books, although I'm sure others will be more than happy to jump in. I learned this stuff the hard way, through making mistakes, reading what little was out there and gaining experience.

For any new collector, especially those interested in errors of varieties, I would STRONGLY recommend learning as much about the minting process as possible. The more you know about the minting process, the easier it will be to recognize authentic errors from post mint damage. It will also help aid in understanding the difference between real and counterfeit coins. Maybe somebody can post some good links

Sorry bro. I wasn't trying to be hurtful. God knows I'm quite capable of that should I decide to. I was just trying to be honest. I'll refrain in the future.

Tommy P: I didn't take it as a slam at you. NCRick was one of the few new member that actually wants to learn about the details. I thought it would be nice to add some explanation under the assumption that a new collector can learn something. Sometimes I have time to do this and other times It's just a short answer.

Understood and no offense taken. It seemed like the poster was offended at what I said so I was just trying to explain.

No not at all. You took that the wrong way. I was really saying thanks a lot. I thought your answer was great and very helpful. I don't want someone to be dishonest with me especially if I try and sell or trade any coin and I have the wrong info. Sorry if my reply sounded bad.

Ok haha. We are all good. No one was offended and everyone is trying to help. This is what this hobby has done to me. Its like a sickness. I know its sad with the piles but this is my sorting process. I've bought a few of my friends change jars and other sources and this is maybe a 3rd of it. A lot to go through for sure.

Hey paddy. Yes I noticed that I made a few mistakes just like my "ABY" help instead of any. I was falling asleep when I posted that. Maybe I should have waited till today. :)
