Hello Folks, sorry if my question might sound obvious to most of you as both American citizens and collectors. I was wondering: is there any connection between the mints and actual circulation? New Orleans coins circulated most in the South, Philadelphia coins circulate most in the East and so on? Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help. Bye.

    Ivano,

Today, the U.S. Mint has only two facilities that produce and distribute coins intended for circulation.......Philadelphia which services the eastern half of the U.S. and Denver which services the western half of the U.S. It can be just as hard for collectors in the east to find coins produced in Denver as it is for collectors in the west to find coins produced in Philly.

    Agree.
When San Fran made coins for general circulation they were much harder to get in the east than the Denver coins. Some of that may have been because the "S" mintage was lower than the others but also because of the distribution methods.

All valid comments, but there are several countervailing factors to consider besides just location of the mints:
    • Credit cards, debit cards, and even checks result in a proportionately lower usage of cash than was the case, say, in the mid-19th Century.
    • Inflation over the years has resulted in a smaller percentage of circulating money (measured by face value) being coins as opposed to paper
    • Modern transportation, especially jet travel, result in earlier and wider dispersion of coins from point A to point B
    • Population increase has certainly increased the absolute volume of coins in circulation.
But it's still a whole lot easier to find a "P" quarter in New York than in Arizona, and vice versa for "D" dimes.
