Shop owner: Coin theft suspect caught on return

This guy shows one of the most common cognitive flaws of criminals: he thinks he's pretty smart, and everybody else is pretty dim. Close, but backward.

Sure hope that 1800 dollar was slabbed; I'd hate for it to come back with brand-new scratches...

This is great. I make it to Chris' shop pretty regularly and I'm glad they snagged this guy. Hilarious that he'd be dumb enough to come back in.

    therocktjb Wait, what**

I think I've been to that coin shop once before when I went to Iowa to visit my former in-laws quite a few years back. I'm glad they caught the guy, some criminals are just too confident in their abilities...that's why they always get caught.

DARN! I had yesterday off and never made it to the shop. I could've seen that. That place is a regular stop for me.

I think he's a little high on most(slabbed) things, but I still stop semi-regularly. I much prefer Coins, Stamps & Stuff.

I don't get too complicated with what I buy, haven't really looked at slabbed coins yet. Soon though, I would like 1 perfect coin.

He has a lot of nice coins, don't get me wrong. High grade, high quality. But, when I was looking at the Leif Erickson commemorative he had it in MS67 for 125. I then found it on Ebay for 75 in the same grade, both PCGS.

His selection of slabbed stuff is infinitely larger/better than Coins, Stamps and Stuff.

And no I wasn't hoping the guy got away, just disappointed I missed a little action.

Coins stamps n stuff doesn't keep any silver or slabs where you can see them, so I'm not sure what they have, but Christopher's is pretty friendly when you want to look at something, I've never been disappointed with anything there.

Just ask to see the 90% bin if that's what you're interested in. And they have several rotating cases and they've never looked at me cross eyed when I've asked to look at something. They don't have a ton of slabs--probably just half a rotating case..but they have more silver and more variety in general than Christopher's, IMO.

Where Christopher's has a lot more slabbed coins and mainly semi-key and key dates, CS&S has a ton of raw stuff and is where you'd go to fill up a book. They also have pretty much every mint issued anything over the last 20, 25 years. And when I haven't found something in the case, I've just asked and they'll dig around until they find it.

The last time I stopped in at CS&S hunting Lincoln Memorial proofs and they had none in the bins or in the cases and when I asked, they found everything I needed behind the counter.

I'm just more partial to CS&S because it doesn't feel quite so stuffy and I like the guys behind the counter.

Either way, I'm glad to have two great shops within a 15 minute drive.

I shop at both places depending on what I want. Cs&s had some pretty good deals on silver proof sets, Christopher's although a little pricey had some nice raw coins, finished my nickel and dime book just the other day. Not keen on shops putting a grade on raw coins but some of the ones i got at Christopher's are deffinitley ms 60ish .
