OK, pretty much everyone around here knows I work at a bank...and I'm always looking for interesting notes to buy. Well, I started checking all my $1 bills for star notes this week. I figure, I can buy all those I see and bring them home and go through them. If I want them...I'll keep them and if not spend them. I'm not losing anything. So, here is this weeks find:

    1995 Chicago G11440843*
    1999 Philadelphia C02921988*
    2003 Chicago G05897919*
    2003 Chicago G07020884*
    2003 Atlanta F05925233*
    2003A Atlanta F03049785*

All are circulated but not too bad (except the 1995 which is limp). The 2003 Chicago G070...is the nicest of them all. Also, the Philadelphia note has a star drawn on it with a blue pen and a little staining. But, for face...I can't complain!

What's the back plate number on the 1995 Chicago note?

    372. Is there a rare variety depending on plate numbers for that series or something?

Yes, unfortunately you don't have it. :(

It would be the key note in 295 errors (hint: the back plate number would be 295 ;))

I never knew what the back plate numbers were or what they were for.

Anyway, nice finds! I wish I could work at a bank! I love collecting star notes. I have come across three $100 star notes, but I couldnt keep them because I was like 13 and my parents got them from the bank when cashing their checks. And I've seen 1 $50 star note, but my parents gave it to my grandmother, under the clause that I should get it when she passes. and i did have TONS of $20 star notes, but we hit a rough spot and had to spendthem all. It was almost $400 worth. Ever since then I havent seem to come across a single one :( I came across my first in months just yesterday and decidede to spend it.

I see $20, $50 and $100 star notes all the time but I don't set them aside because I don't want to spend that much money. If I found something really nice, I would. But, the average star note...I don't (except $1s).

Although, I did get a CHCU Series 2003 Philadelphia $5 star note which I kept. It came from a print run of 640,000.

Well all of the $20s that I had were aquired over a period of like 3 or 4 years. I would normally find two maybe three a month? My mom would find them and just give them to me whenever she came across any of them.

What I do think I'm going to do is pick a specific Federal Reserve Bank and work on a collection from them. I figure I can afford to save 2 20s per series (or what ever it would take) and so on without losing too much money. But, I need to pick a bank first. But, I think thats how I'm eventually going to collect FRNs once I really get this hobby figured out.

But, I'll probably still keep all the $1 stars I find.

Well, Monday is typically our biggest day as far as money moving because of businesses doing their weekend deposits. So, I saw a lot of cash yesterday. And within that cash were these 2 $1 stars:

    2003 Chicago G08899914*
    2003A New York B12514272*

In most cases it doesn't really mean much. It's a cross reference to the master plate.

1995 295 back plates printed at the Fort Worth facility were an oddity. Actually listed as an engraving error. The number was the wrong font. Supposed to be 1.2 mm but was 1.0 mm as a note printed in Washington, D.C.

i have yet to see a 295 error note. i think i missed any oppurtunity of finding one in circulation. I also think clembo is hoarding most of them for some future mass release :D

Your chances are getting slimmer all the time. I'm not hoarding MOST of them by the way but a big chunk would be true.

I actually put some on the open forum a long time ago. Maybe I should do it again.

I think this is my best find at the bank so far (it was several months ago), this series 2003 Philadelphia $5 star is CHCU and comes from a run of 640,000.

    Nice note RichieB...
I am sure that will be a winner in a few years to come! If I were you and had all those bank connections...I would order some notes (yes stars) and see what happens? You just never know what you may get!

I probably take in 2 staps worth of $1s per day and I search all of them. I make it a point to scan everything else I take in...but I don't let $1s go until I have gone through them. I probably won't order anything, but I search several thousands of dollars a day.
