    fretboard Defender of Old Coinage!

Just showing a gold pendant, quite a price as well! ;) I realize you gotta pay through the nose when selling on ebay, but really? For one thing my wife would never wear something like this as she's Asian and I'm a man, so I'm not gonna wear it either! laughhard.gif To be honest with you, the only thing I like about it is the gold coin and the bezel, that I would wear, if it hung on a gold chain! :phantom: The rest of the item would go to the scrap pile! :D Honestly, someone will like it and if I could I would hold a contest on when it's gonna sell? Doug won't allow that, as I've tried that before and I understand why as well! :D We can just have a guess for fun tho'?! It's gonna be Christmas before we know it, my guess is it will sell in the first week of December. What do you think? What would be your guess, when it sells?? Guess a specific week or a specific, date. Anyone?? :D

They are actually called "tokens" and not coins

Two different series of Caciques de Venezuela were minted; one series was minted in Switzerland in 1957, weight is aprox. 6 g and on the reverse there is the legend
    INTER-CHANGE BANK
    SUIZA 1957

The other series was minted in Caracas as one can see from the legend
ACUÑADA EN CARACAS, n.d., weight is aprox. 1.6 g

Don't know where the eBay seller got the date 1962 'cause the tokens are not dated.

Their value (of the tokens) seems to be bullion value, e.g.

One has to add the gold value and craftsmanship of the pendant to have an estimate of the price.

I was born in Venezuela of a Texan father (God rest his soul) and a Venezuelan mother, and moved to the US when I was 5 (1962). My Dad went to Venezuela straight out of college with a Petroleum Engineering degree to work for Creole Production, a subsidiary of Humble Oil (now Exxon Mobil) in the 1950’s. That was back when times were good in Venezuela, sadly not so anymore. Last week I was in Houston visiting with my Mom and we were CRH half dollars. She mentioned it was common in Venezuela in her younger days for the ladies to wear bracelets made of gold and silver Venezuelan coins.

    Great story.

As you say, those were good times in Venezuela. The climate and nature is so beautiful, and people were so friendly and welcoming. It is a tragedy what happened and is still happening there, it is unbelievable.

Yes, the ladies used to wear bracelets with gold coins or silver coins and wear them. I think the gold coins were called "doblones". And even at marriages the kids that were ring bearers carried a bowl with silver coins.

From 1873 up to 1936 silver coins (.900) were minted; after that the composition changed from silver to nickel. There are many variations, and many of the variations have Simon Bolivar on the obverse. Beautiful coins.

Yes, Bolivars! I still have some old coins (some silver Bolivars), that Mom & Dad had given me over the years. When I was a Boy Scout, I earned my Coin Collecting merit badge by putting together a coin album including US coins from my birth year, and many foreign coins including Venezuelan coins. I found that old album last year and combined it into my new Foreign album. The Venezuelan coins hold a prominent place in the new album. :)
