Heritage has a PCGS 1928-S MS63 Peace Dollar in auction right now with one of the most unique toning patterns I have ever seen. I would like to know what everyone thinks of this coin and if anyone has thoughts as to the origin of the toning. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1117&Lot_No=8414
Whizzing is used to simulate luster, this coin is mint state and fully lustrous. If you think it has been cleaned in someway, that I can buy, but not whizzed.
I think Lehigh has brought a whole new insight about toning to this board. I like it..... The insight and the coin.
I'll have to disagree with that statement. If a coin is protected and stored correctly, the coin wont tone. This is why coins have to be stored in a low humidity environment. Toning is a term to describe the tarnish or light patina that forms on the surface of the metal due to exposure to environmental agents or toxins. If you eliminate the exposure, you eliminate the toning.
I think that one is interesting. I like it, in a weird sort of way...but I'm not sure why. I have never understood why Morgan's and Peace Dollars tone in such different fashions. I assume it has something to do with the texture of the silver...but IMHO Peace Dollars usually tone kind of ugly. But this one, I like for some reason.
I've seen those rustic-looking lines (subject obverse) on circulated silver quarters, but they're uniform and directional, while on the subject coin they're haphazard. I don't think anybody, as yet, has the time-lapsed photographic-understanding of this type of toning to be able to answer your question. Here's the closest I got to trying to figure that out for myself (a pretty crude example, BTW...I know): PS: I'm not a fan of the toning on the subject coin, I think it's a little "chaotic."
Looks like fingerprint toning to me. I have some quarters that did something similar, but not as nice. Guy~
To me the eagle is lovely...but Liberty isn't as nice. That would be one I would display with the eagle as the centerpiece
As to the source of the toning, just a guess but I would say that the coin was wrapped up in a piece of cloth and put away for a while.
Richie, I feel exactly the same way. I can't describe why I like the toning on this coin, but I do, I really really do. I have considered starting a collection of toned Peace Dollars. I don't want to collect rainbow toned examples as they are so rare and expensive that it will turn an easy set into a decade long project. Rather, I would like to assemble a set of unique and interestingly toned Peace Dollars MS63+. I already have one which you guys have already seen, this would be a nice second addition. I will probably buy one really fantastic rainbow toned Peace Dollar as the centerpiece of the set with the rest looking like these.
