Well, this morning started off in a funk. Made a 1 hr drive to look as some car parts for sale via Craigslist that didn't work out. Was on my ride home and decided to stop for coffee. Usually i get a medium, which is $1.9x or so and i just leave $2 and walk out, but today I wanted a large for some reason, and the bill was $2.18 or something. Hand over $3 and as the lady is pulling out change, i hear the unmistakable sound of silver. So...i asked for a few bucks in quarters before she had closed the drawer and bought out whatever was left of that particular roll. So, i walked out to my car with my large coffee...and thefound these in my hand Made my morning
Score! :hail: Good job catching it too! It has been a long time since I've found a silver quarter in change.
Correct Two 1964 One 1964-d 1963 1959 1958-d 1940 Nothing really special, all technically junk silver, but I collect washingtons. Good news is 7 coins in one find allows me to finish up a roll of silver quarters that I found in circulation. Been searching for five years, but I've made many rolls of wheat cents, and one complete roll of quarters. I've found only one silver roosie and one war nickel in circulation. One funny thing to add. When I was about to pay for the coffee, I looked down at my bills and saw a series 1993 $1. I had a few other bills, so I paid with those intending on hanging onto the 1993 note....then I heard the jingle and quickly forgot about it and handed it over. Now I'm kicking myself for not checking to see if it was a web note first!
Congrats! A 2 dollar coffee paid itself off in no time! I mean spending $2.25 and geting $21 a scrap silver is great!
My question is; Did you buy every quarter she had in the till or ask if there were any rolls she could sell ? I mean, it is likely the entire roll was silver and there's a chance she had more silver rolls ? Great Find !
Beautiful find. That would have made my day too! I love finding Silver quarters. You should have bought another coffee and got MORE quarters. Really clean 'em out! - coincrazed
Correct, i bought whatever was left of the roll that she got my initial change out of. I think i got 2 quarters in my normal change, and that's when i asked for $3 in quarters in addition to that. She actually counted it out on the counter, so when she put it on the counter and i saw FIVE silver quarters sitting there, my heart skipped a beat. Fortunatelly she selected the silver ones to give to me. There were more in the roll, but a quick scan showed they were all clad that was left. Strangely enough, the other quarters were statehood quarters too. I scored 7 silver quarters...but i can only wonder how many others were in thar roll...or why they were there anyway Sometimes i wonder how far can one go in a store when it comes to change. What if i'm in a store and i look in the til and see a merc dime sitting there. Do i ask for it? I remember one time i SWORE i saw an indian head cent in a tip jar. But i didn't do anything about it because what do you say in that situation?
I do it all the time. Anytime I can see into the money tray I focus on the corner typically used for dollar, halves, rubber bands, keys... and if I spot something I request it for my change. However, many stores may not break out rolls if they don't need to so they aren't running short of coins and having to recount masses of coins at the end of their shift or end of the day. Just ask them if you see something. All they can say is no or that they are saving it for themselves already, however more than likely, they will be thrilled to get rid of dollar coins, halves and $2 bills.
I think you should ask. Agree that all that can happen is for them to say no. You have a chance at least. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
