Here is a small nickle It's a 1962, it has a different color, more of a flat slate gray, kind of like a war nickle would have. It's a little smaller in size, (as in not as big around) and it is a lot thinner. The weight on my scale is 4.7 as in a reg. nickle is 5.1 ( it said in the red book it should be 5.0 but my scales says it's 5.1) I have pictures that show it pretty well.. Would someone please tell me if this is an error, and if not..what is it? Thanks...:smile
I'm not an error expert, but the obverse looks worn. I don't know how likely it is for the actual coin to be worn down. Sorry I can't help.
Im not sure what it is..but I don't think it's smaller because it's worn.. I have them much older and worn much more, and still their size is the same.. but thanks so much for looking... have a Great Day..
Simple wear wouldn't account for that much thickness and weight difference but I can't tell you what would.Very interesting!Any opinions??
Can you show us the edge of normal and this one to compare thickness? While the coin is worn, doesn't look worn enough to be considerably thinner. Wonder about wrong planchet? It also has a lot more wear than a nickel coin of that age, I think. Wrong metal?

It is only missing .3 in weight, so I don't think it's a dime planchet, although it seems to be the right color for silver. Possibly a different silver planchet? More educated error enthusiasts will post soon.
It looks like both faces have been buffed down. It's not natural wear and it's not a weak strike. The convex edge and abnormally small diameter are definitely signs of post-strike alteration. Conclusion: Not an error.
I agree with Mike. I have a similar nickel that was likely altered with some sort of acidic concoction and it displays similarities to your coin.
Do you have a caliper? Measure it and the reg coin, could be an illusion with the rounded edges.....Just my .02
