Tuesday as I was beginning my return odyssey from NYC I boarded the M60 bus that would take me to LaGuardia. The fare was $2 and was payable only in coins or a transit card. I had 6 quarters and a Kennedy half but the driver said the device would not accept the half dollar. A guy sitting in a wheelchair on the bus overhead the conversation and let me know (by wildly waving his arm and shouting) that he would let me use his transit card for the $2 in coins. Deal. He was beaming while he inspected the half dollar. He said he had wanted one for a long time and he planned to keep this one. I'm glad I could give him something to be happy about. Thursday I went to KFC and after paying my change due was 70 cents. The cashier casually handed me a 1991-D Kennedy half and two dimes. I was a bit taken aback because I cannot remember the last time I received a half dollar in change. I spend plenty of them just to get them into circulation but I almost never see any others in circulation. So at the end of the week I ended up with a zero net gain in half dollars as I simply exchanged one Kennedy half for another for a companion to my well-worn 1994-D Kennedy half pocket piece. Now, where to spend the '91-D . . .
Neat story! The last time I was given a half in change was about 7 mo. ago, when I got a 1968-D Kennedy from the Wawa. Needless to say, I bought the rest of them in a heatbeat! Also, Penn State University uses only halves at the concession stands at their football games.
wow, I am surprised. You must have been wearing that 'tourist' badge that I gave you, 'cause if you gave a 1/2$ to a New Yorker, they'd hit you. and probably call you a commie or something like that.
