Many know I'm fond of German States coinage. I'm collecting one from as many states as I can with a focus on minor coins in higher grades. I'm up to 68 different states currently. I don't often post about a single coin, but this beauty just arrived in the mail today. From the city of Rostock comes this one year type. A pfennig with gorgeous toning and bountiful luster. Even in the true views you can see the light bouncing off the coin! City of Rostock 1848-BS Pfennig KM# 138 PCGS MS64BN Also, I have a brand new phone coming in that will take much greater photos than my current DG special, so I'll be in the process of imaging some coins that don't have true views and such. Thanks for taking the time to look!
That is a really cool coin. It has the feel of an ancient coin with the city’s symbol without writing on the obverse.
There are quite a few older German coins like this, especially small denominations. After a while, you associate certain imagery with certain cities/States, the Rostock griffin is a prime example! In the Standard catalogue of German coins, there are three pages like the following to narrow down states just by imagery alone! Other than my college textbooks, the most expensive book I've purchased!
