I recently won a 'duplicate' scarce emperor portrait at auction and now have a provincial bronze from Antioch and now an Imperial Antoninianus.....I now wonder just how scarce an Antoninianus of Aemilian actually is??? An acsearch review (as well as other searches) seemed to reveal few, if any, Ant examples. Naturally, coins of an Emperor reigning as briefly as Aemilian are bound to be a bit scarce or even rare----Aemilian was Roman Emperor for only three months in 253 AD.

"Aemilian was Commander of the Moesian troops, obtaining an important victory against the invading Goths and was, for this reason, acclaimed Emperor by his army. He then moved quickly to Italy, where he defeated the Emperor Trebonnianus Gallus, only to be killed by his own men when another general, Valerian, proclaimed himself Emperor and moved against Aemilian with a larger army."

Provincial Bronze of Antioch, with three military standards reverse:

AR Antoninianus of Aemilian, radiate bust with apollo holding branch and lyre reverse:

Please post any Aemilian coins you may have and ESPECIALLY silver Ants.

Really, I think the Romans had a far more entertaining version of politics. Wouldn't it be fun if all the presidential candidates had to recruit their own armies and go to battle for the title? I'd watch that.

    Sweet score, Mikey-Z ... congrats

Hmmm, apparently Aemilian is relatively rare (118 or 124 on the two ERIC-II rarity lists ... where "1" is the most common and "207" is the most rare)

... sadly, I don't have an example to toss into your cool thread (*sigh*)
