my father served in the us air force for 25 years, and towards the end of his service we were stationed in yakota afb, japan, and kadena afb, okinawa, for almost 6 years combined. recently, i pulled out all of my coined yen (over ¥6000 face) and went down memory lane... showa 59 (1984) ¥1... my sisters and i thought these were made of plastic when we were young. we were wrong. just 1g of aluminum. showa 58 (1983) ¥5... my mom has always loved these coins because of the hole in them. showa 60 (1985) ¥10... my sisters and i would sneak off the base to the corner "10-yen store" (as we called it) to buy candy by the handfulls, which only cost ¥10. showa 27 (1952) ¥10... the oldest yen in my collection, pulled from circulation. showa 57 (1982) ¥50... again, my mom loved it because of the hole. moms... what would we do without them??
Thanks for sharing your coin photos & walk down memory lane. Every time I look at a coin in my collection, I reminisce about when I got the coin.
