The continuing Russian Civil War brought intervention from countries such as Great Britain, France, Poland and Greek volunteers into Southern Russia and Ukraine in December 1918 to counter the communist attempt at taking over Russia. The intervention failed in the South of Russia and Ukraine though and the foreign forces were evacuated in April 1919. In preparation for their occupation of that part of Russia, these notes were prepared in Great Britain, utilizing lithographic printing. Because of the quick failure of the operation, these notes were never used and were stored for a long period of time before they were released to the collecting community.
