A rare sestertius of Tiberius I purchased the other day

I am super thrilled to have won this sestertius in an auction! It is actually a very rare type, it seems to make an appearance less frequently than some of the other types, such as the Temple of Concordia. Although this reverse is very common in the smaller denominations, the sestertius is very difficult to obtain (I counted 5 on acsearch). So very happy to get one!

Wow, another total winner => I agree with chrsmat (fantastic eye-appeal, love the green patina)

=> are those Victorys on pedestals? (very cool)

Especially in front of and behind the neck, the coin surface seems to have undergone some major plastering. Not to downgrade your purchase, but just wondering. I would have much hesitation buying because of this. Did you take this into consideration ? Or is it for you totally compensated by its rarity and the value for your collection ?

I have to agree with THC. It looks like there has been too much messing around with the obverse. Otherwise, the rarity of the coin might have made me interested.

Yes, I did consider that. However, I collect Julio-Claudian coins, so there are several different types of this reverse, all rare. Considering that, I don't mind having one like this, although usually it would completely rule a coin out for me were it not so rare. Nicer examples regularly go over $5,000, so I was willing to take it even with the condition. Most coins I would want better examples even if they are rare, but some I am just looking to acquire in the first place, and if I can replace them at a later date that is wonderful, but if not then at least I have one.

Thanks, i think most ancient collectors at some time stood for this type of decision. So, even more, congratulations with this one !

The saddest part is => I don't think that the smoothing adds anything to the coins overall look (quite the contrary, actually) ... oh well, again that's a great addition (very cool coin)
