In amongst all of the Republican coins that I purchased recently, I purchased a couple of others, and one was this Nero Tet. NERO 67/68 A.D. (Year 14, Alexandria) Billon Tetradrachm 24 mm., 13.36 gm., Obv: NEΡΩ KΛAY KAIΣ ΣEB ΓEΡ AV, radiate bust left, wearing aegis,LIΔ to left. Rev: HPA APGEIA, Veiled and draped bust of Hera Argeia right, star to right. BMC 133; Dattari 236; Milne 297
That is a very interesting coin with a not so common reverse. I have one with a bust of Alexandria which I believe to be more common than Hera. NERO AR Billon Tetradrachm OBVERSE: NERW KLAV KAIS SEB GER, radiate bust right, wearing aegis REVERSE: AVTOKPA, draped bust of Alexandria right in elephant skin headdress, LIB to right, year 12 Struck at Alexandria, Egypt, 65/6AD 10.8g, 28mm Köln 172-174; Curtis 36-54, Dattari 204, SGI 633, RPC 5289.
Great tet! Poppaea (63 - 65 A.D.) Billon tetradrachm O: NEPΩ KΛAY KAIΣ ΣEB ΓEP AY, radiate head right. R.ΠOΠΠAIA ΣEBAΣTH, draped bust of Poppaea right, date LI right (year 10). Alexandria mint 63 - 64 A.D. 12.5g 25mm Milne 216, Curtis 132, RPC I 5275, Geissen 157
All the posts are definitely interesting examples of Tetradrachms! Those reverses are way more appealing than just another eagle (IMHO): I have one from the Antioch mint...unfortunately after playing around with an old photo, I never got around to a proper re-shoot:
I love these 1st-century Alexandrian tets that are larger and finer than later issues. By sheer coincidence, I have one that some of you might be interested in the next time my coin truck drives through your neighborhood. If time has left this post behind forgive and ignore me but this arrived today, it's very cool I think, and cheap for a Nero coin. Nero billon tetradrachm, Alexandria, Egypt, r.
