Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a great day so far. For right now, I have just a simple question. Does anyone know if PCGS will declare a coin variety and an error on the same slab? I'm contemplating putting a batch of coins together in the somewhat-near future to send in, and one of them would be the Franklin half that I had posted a while ago. It's got some kind of planchet error (or possibly a ragged clip, but it's not entirely through the planchet) as well as the "Bugs Bunny" variety, and I'm curious if they will put all of that onto one slab. They might need a bigger slab if they write it out the way I do, which makes me wonder if they do this for any coins. I've tried searching (half-heartedly) for a few examples to no avail. Anyways, thanks for your time!
I don't know if that slab style is still used, Newcomb 3 is identified by the rotated dies, it's not an anomaly that happened in addition to the variety. The "mint error" label is actually a variety. I have a D/D/D/S Buffalo with the same slab. Gen 4.0 And a clamshell error on a Jefferson. Gen 5.0. Also you might want to post the error here for opinions, or call PCGS to make sure they will attribute it.
Not all 1852 N-3 cents have rotated dies, it depends on the die state. Many EDS N-3's have a normal die orientation. It costs extra to add the rotated dies to the label, here is an example of the same variety without the notation. Please see the picture below.
I have yet to find one without rotated dies, I see what you posted that may be true. My point was that the generation of slab is the difference. Many of Newcomb 3 sold as newcomb 3 were not labeled. It is a slab generation that put the labeling. I have not had any coins slabbed so I cannot say yes or no if they will add all the info or not. As Collect said above for a fee they may put whatever you want on the slab. From what I have seen thru the years it is only from so and so's collection.
I would definitely be willing to pay for it, but I want to be absolutely certain it's actually a clip, planchet flaw, or whatever and not just PMD. If damaged, it would be a total waste of money, which I'd very much prefer to avoid!
Here you go, this one is the most modern generation, and it even has a pedigree. Lots of words on this label.
Guys, if you're not already aware you need to be aware that PCGS will only attribute a very short list of varieties and or errors. They will attribute far fewer coins than any other TPG. And that list has changed from time to time over the years. Here is an example of what I mean, this is their current variety list - https://www.pcgs.com/Varietyfaq The same kind of thing goes for errors, they will only attribute certain errors and no others. But again that list has changed over the years. My point here is that with the various slab generations, and what PCGS would or would not put on the slab at that time varied as that list changed. And just because they did or did not do something in years past that doesn't necessarily mean they will or will not do it now. To get your answers you should probably call them and ask. But from what has been reported many times over the years, their customer service regarding such things leaves a lot to be desired.
That link was very helpful! I am very much leaning towards actually contacting them to see if I can get their current variety and error attributions. On the coinfacts app, they do have the "Bugs Bunny" variety attributable, but I have no clue as to what they will or won't declare the planchet issue as, if anything. Thank you for your help!
If you post it in the error section, we can help you with that, and if it is worthy of paying the attribution fee or not.
I'll get my little shoebox setup going today after running some errands and see if I can manage to grab some better photos of it to post.
