So my question is, would you be better off keeping your roll unopened and sitting motionless somewhere, orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........................ Would you be better off sending the thing in to have it graded and individually packaged in those special plastic holders. My initial thought is that the plastic holders would be best, but as my theories on cleaning my Wheaties with Blue Magic have been discredited years ago, I must ask for clarification. On a side note; My presidential proof dollars from over 5 years ago have what seems to be some discoloration that looks suspiciously like rust. The other coins look fine, and on top of that, the paper in there looks fine as well.
Certainly don't clean them. If you leave them in the original packaging in a spot where humidity and temperature change aren't a problem, they should stay in good condition. However, you won't be able to see them which would be a major negative for me. Slabbing is very expensive when you do it rolls at a time.
Dessicant (Silica gel and others) is great, but ONLY on two conditions : Coins and dessicant are kept together in an air-tight enclosed place There is plenty of dessicant I don't use plain silica gel. I use EvaDry rechargeable silica gel. Works great. I have my coin's humidity down around 16%rh, even when ambient humidity is 50-60% or more. Dessicant isn't enough, because humidity isn't the only "bad guy". I protect my coins from other nasties by keeping them in Intercept Shield boxes. It's possible the paper in the rolls themselves is a "bad guy"; I don't know. Sometimes it gives a really fabulous tone, sometimes ugly.
Those aren't the only options. If you choose to take 'em out of the paper, you can put them in inert plastic rolls *or* individually packaged in air-tites. Sending them off to be graded is expensive and not a good option for low-value coins. Most TPGs only give a "bulk discount" for 100 or more identical coins.
