im new here and just found this site. back quite a few years ago my dad was really big into metal dececting and over the years he found loads of coins.
since he passed away 3 years ago my mom has still kept all the coins and we are wanting to try and get a value on them to see if they are worth anything.
now i will say this is something i know very little about at all. so i got a book this afternoon to try and help find a value. it will take some time i know but was looking to get some info from some of you all what is the best way to go about all of it.
i know coins have a value from 1-60 or somthing like that but really dont know at all how to judge the value of them other than sending them off to be graded.
would the best thing to do is look in the book we have and if there are some in there that we think might be worth something to put them in a seperate pile so to say and look at them later or what?
any ideas you all could give would be a huge help

You should start by making a list of the individual coins by denomination and date including any mint mark on the coin. Once that is completed, you can post it here and we can at least point out any key date issues if any.

I would guess that since the coins were all underground at one point they won't have much value unless they are key dates. I would use the red book to determine which years command a premium. If you have any odd coins that you don't know about the best way would be to post some pictures.

Best thing I can say is try to list them for us, and try to learn to grade as often the grade is the most important factor. Also, if any coin has corrosion, bent, or holed then most of the value is gone regardless of the grade.
