a few of you in response to my other rim burr post showed nice examples. some of my rim burrs just have the copper area exposed and such. however, I am seeing something on my half and others halves that resembles a lamination? is that part of the rim burr? is that something that happens when the burr is created? does it only happen to halves? I don't see that peel look on my quarters. thank you.
@Mountain Man that's my bad. Can't believe I did that. I was in a hurry. Here are a couple screenshots from other post. ( The top one in the 2nd pic)
That's what I thought, but then I started wondering if it was damaged planchet. They all look so similar, when normally you can't find 2 that look close each other because each one is suppose to be unique. I could be over thinking it. I find odd though that there are 3 coins that look similar, and they all take place on half dollars??
I think the coins in your photos Are Blanking Burr Errors. http://www.error-ref.com/_blanking_burr_/ Damage on a blanking die can produce a substantial number of defective planchets. The second coin is questionable for this type of error as the edge of the coin is distorted.
The fang-like, struck-in pieces of metal are classic rim burrs -- a form of pre-strike planchet damage. They have nothing to do with blanking burrs. The quarter also shows pre-strike planchet damage of an indeterminate sort.
