So I purchased this coin on ebay, and feel like I got a great deal, but I want to know what others think about this. Please let me know your honest opinion. What are your thoughts about buying coins like this on ebay in general? Could this be considered a wise investment? Did I pay too much?

Is this just a pointless question to be asking?

    1884 "Hot 50" VAM-2A 'E' Clash

I purchased this from ebay for $65 and I am a bit concerned about whether or not I got a good deal. I felt like I got a great deal at the time, but I would sincerely appreciate others opinions. Also, what might have caused the discolored areas on the paper around the edges and next to the coin?

    Was the shipping free?

If not its a bit high on price. NGC lists the value at $55.20.

As far as your question about the discoloration. First, that's not paper the coin is held in. Its a stiff rubber material. As far as the discoloration, I'm not sure exactly, but it might have had contact with moisture prior to the coin being housed in it.

Not really, but it would have been smarter to ask it before you pulled the trigger. Sure, if you're not happy with it, you can always return it, but you're still out the money for shipping, and you're assuming that the seller won't give you a hard tme about it. Did you bother checking the negs on his feedback? The biggest problem is that the seller doesn't even provide a reverse photo, and this is where the "E" clash is located. Is this a case where you "bought the slab and not the coin"? One of the obverse markers is supposed to be the dash under the second "8", and even with the enlargement, I can't see it. Did you ask the seller for a reverse photo and enlargements of the critical areas? Did you check the VAM-2A listing on VAMWorld? In it, Leroy states that it is a weak clashed "E". Since clashes have a tendency to fade as the dies continue striking coins, it may be that this is a late die state. I've seen some "E" clashes that were so faint, you'd need a microscope to view them.

These are all things you should have considered to make your eBay buying experience more satisfying.

I looked at the NGC value of $55.20, but figured that was the value for a typical 1884, without being a VAM-2A. Does the fact that it's a "top 50" have nothing to do with the value? I figured that the minting errors would add at least $10 to the value because of the rarity of it, but I am asking because I want to learn this, and I don't know. And yes, shipping was included. I also contacted the seller and he said that the discoloration is a shadow from the case when photographed. Any other thoughts? Anyone?

Thank you for the reply. When I made the purchase, I considered that NGC wouldn't claim it as a VAM-2A if it isn't so. Also, I based this purchase of the fact that typical (non-VAM top 100's or top 50's) MS62 1884 P Morgans have been going for $65 slabbed, so anything added is great. I think I just got a little too excited and jumped right in without thinking about it enough. It had been posted for less than an hour, and I was only the 6th person to have viewed it, so I thought it would have sold by the time I asked for all of the specifics about the item. Maybe that's the wrong way to approach this though.

Kazmer81, I merged your 2 threads. Please only one thread per topic, as multiples get people confused as to if they have answered or not.

    Thanks

$55.20 is a fair price even with the VAM in the hot 50, several have sold from between that price and $59.75 locally.

What does that look like in hand as far as the shadow goes?

    The coin arrived

So I received the coin, and the coin looks good to me. The clash is visible to the naked eye, and there is actually some clashing elsewhere, aside from the "E". Also, the mark is there, under the 8, and it's a beautiful coin. It also has some nice die cracks. I will post images on here later. I agree that $55 is a more fair deal though, and I am asking for a $10 refund, but not because of the coin. The coin is nice, but the case different issue. The "shadow" areas are not just shadows, but it doesn't seem to be from moisture. It's unusual, but it's from where the inside rubber is touching against the clear case on the inside. When I push on other areas, it alleviates the tension and it goes away, very strange. I wonder if anyone else has ever experienced this with NGC cases before. Also, how much would it cost to have NGC reslab this? It's already been evaluated and all, it just needs to be put into a new slab. Thank you again for all of your help!
