I bought an 1826 British farthing on eBay, and it arrived today. I was pleased to discover it was not in fact a farthing, but a penny instead. The penny, half penny and farthing from that era had the same design and the denomination is not printed on the coin, so it is almost impossible to tell from photos what they really are. What usually happens though is someone advertises a coin as a penny and it is actually a half penny. This guy was way off, as the farthing is the size of a nickel and the penny the size of a dollar coin. The penny is worth twice as much too, so that's great. It's kind of beat up and it's been cleaned, but I knew that when I bought it, so it's still a nice surprise.
