Anonna was the Roman goddess of grains. In imperial propaganda her use was a reminder to the population of the emperor's kindness in providing the grain dole to every Roman citizen. Going back to the late Republic, every Roman male citizen would get a dole of wheat from the state. Although it was nothing extravagant, it ensured that the poorest citizen in the city could still manage to survive and not starve to death. Something non-citizen did not have the benefit of.

This message was a double edged sword though, fail to freed your citizens and ensure the supply of grain, and everyone will know exactly whom to blame when they start to go hungry.

Definitely a lot nicer than my A. Pius Denarius of Salus.

Still, a Salus is still a wonderful coin to have...one of my favorite Roman deities.

Sweet score Lawyer Sallent ... yah, you totally win, for I don't have a silver A-Pius (yet)

    Total score

Ummm, or does this baby count?

Egypt, Alexandria, Antoninus pius BI Tet

Ummm, do BI-Tet count as silver? (that's an old argument, eh?)

Congrats again on scoring such a sweet OP-addition

That OP coin is definitely an eye-catcher-- nice surfaces and toning :)

My only Annona is Nero-flavored and comes with a side of Ceres:

VERY nice AP! Nailed it on the Grain Issue...

There are some EARLY Roman Republic problems with bad guys selling way overpriced grain to the needy, and that got themselves killed over it!
