This was sent to me by a friend who knew I had been looking for one. Harun al-Rashid is the caliph featured in the 1001 Arabian Nights tales. Harun al-Rashin Abbasid Dynasty AR dirhem – 192 AH 808 AD
Nice. That Abbasid design was quite popular for many years. And I've noticed the Harun ar-Rashid normally carries a bit of a premium for the 1001 nights fame.
Very nice coin Bill good one to add to the many excellent coin you have :thumb: but why do they always put the hole off center , I've yet to buy a coin that has a hole centered, when I see something rare or historic that I must have I buy it regardless of the hole or where it is,regards Harry :stooge:
I just realized - this is also the caliph that sent an elephant as a gift to the court of Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne!
Yeah, he got around. What significance does that hole have, BTW, have you looked into that? A holey coin for the Holy Roman Emperor? Just kidding. But I wouldn't think something like that would hurt the value of a specimen like this.
The hole probably serves to allow it, and others, to be strung on to a cord. A solution for those without good pockets.
Very cool coin, that is neat. That hole gives it a good amount of character IMHO, nice. :thumb: Phoenix
