I finally get to share this set we recently purchased! Long story short this set came in with the B Max. Mehl coins I've been posting lately. This set was raw and wrapped in the original tissue paper. No collector or numismatist had seen this set in close to 100 years. The tissue paper toned these coins SPECTACULARLY. The set made waves at the ANA went we sent it to PCGS for show walkthrough. The grades are as follows: $1 Proof 66+ (6 finer known), 50c Proof 64+, 25c Proof 66, 10c Proof 66, 5c Proof 65+ and 1c Proof 65 Red Brown. What makes this even better is ALL THE COINS are CAC approved! As far as I know this is the only original (not put together from single coins) CAC verified 1895 proof set. Enjoy these spectacular images!
That’s a great set, and the fact that it’s an original set makes it spectacular. I wish I had the money to buy it. I hope that it can be kept intact. Sets like this are historic, compared to put together sets, and an “endangered species.
I don't think I've ever seen anything so beautiful in my life. Those coins individually are each spectacular. As an original set, kept together, unadulterated, it's a magnificent thing of beauty. #blownaway
What did you do with the tissue paper @RussHJB? I bought an original 1909 Proof set (with an Indian Cent) at the 1976 ANA show that was held in New York City. The dealer told me the coins were wrapped in the original tissue paper which gave them the same blue toning. I would have liked to have had it, but he tossed it away. And no, I don’t have the set. I sold it get for the down payment on my first home.
That half to me looks so close to a cameo designation, but I'm not a grader. My favorite coin of the set! The nickel coming in second. I love seeing these coins.
Perspective, if anyone is interested...The Kagin August 77 Atlanta Auction featured a very comparative 1894 Toned Proof Set, almost a twin to this 1895 Set. In tissue, no less. The perspective? It sold for $2190.00. I know stuff. I cried all the way home. A measly $60..00. What the hell was I thinking?
