Wow! Clembo bought a Two Cent Piece. Of course a lot of you know I LOVE Two Cent Pieces so why did I buy it? 180 degree die rotation. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0002-3.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0003-5.jpg Nothing fancy and think I may already have one. No real premium just kinda cool. I get first dibs on Two Cent Pieces at work so I went for this one. Our 14 year old intern learned something today after I spotted it. If it's a duplicate (in my collection) I'll probably just give it to him. NEVER too early to get another Two Cent Junkie started!
The 1864 with 180 degree rotation isn't that scarce. There is one variety that always comes that way and it seems to make up about 5% of the 1864's. Good news if you want to get your hands on a rotated reverse coin to show to others because it's an easy and dramatic specimen.
Another reason I get first look Bone. He knows I can spot a small motto a mile away. It is a large motto. I know it isn't scarce. Hence no real premium. I paid $10 for the coin. As you stated though it's good example to show people about rotated dies. The kid at the shop had never really seen one. Like I said I think I already have one and if I do it this one goes to the kid. Nice kid and eager to learn.
A 180 degree rotation is a coin with a coin-turn rotated 180 degrees into a medal-turn. Hoping that makes sense...Mike
In other words when I turn the coin horizontily both side are going to be in the same orientation. Correct? Thanks Mike.
Actually it's Ken Clembo...I was just thanking Mike, LOL. Man, I didn't think this kind of phenomena occured on any other coin than Golbrecht Dollars. Live and learn.
Clembo; No problem. This is true about 2 cent pieces? Medal turn Examples. Man, I keep learning every day....I love this place!!
It is also commonly found on 1807 S-276 large cents. While they can be found in most any rotation around the clock they tend to group around four different positions and probably 70% of them are at about 172 degrees rotation. Makes it a very easy attribution pont. Pick up an 1807 large cent and see if it is medal turn oriented. If it is it's an S-276. There is also a die pair of the proof 1903 V nickel that comes with medal turn orientation. There are probably some others as well. It can happen as an error on any date mint and series but they are scarce. The others mentioned are not hard to find.
