There was a very well attended small show near me. Guessing maybe 20-30 dealers. Because it was close, it was a perfect opportunity to take my six year old boy with me. I would say maybe a third of the dealers gave my boy a coin. He came home with twelve coins. Two that I bought for him. From now on that boy goes to coin shows with me!..... Really I just wanted to say that coin dealers are the best. I wish all those dealers could see this boy admiring his new collection on his bed right now.
My son usually comes home with a few freebies when he goes to shows with me. Looking forward to taking my daughter along too. Maybe I will bring the baby and we will just be swimming in coins. For real though, there are some really great people out there at the shows. Makes up for the mass of curmudgeons.
I second all that! Most of the dealers I’ve come in contact with are great and love to chat it up. More so with kids and that is great! We all have to remember how awesome it was to get our first free bee handed to us as a kid!
It just don’t get much better. Though I probably owe him a Redbook that is NOT the large print version... LOL
That boy did zero in on every gold case at the show. I am afraid he will be one of those high end gold guys when his day comes.
It was the same when my boys were young, they always got freebies. One local show also had a youth auction where kids were given play money and bid on items donated by the dealers. My younger son loved those. Unfortunately neither son stuck with collecting, but who knows they may come back someday.
That's a great story, Randy. Always good to see kids get jazzed about coins. Those dealers are nice guys, but they're also savvy businessmen who know the value of cultivating future customers. Seems like a win-win for all concerned. What kind of coins did your son get? US? World? Both?
I bought him a common Peace and Morgan dollar. He was given a presidential dollar, a proof 59 Lincoln, two common worn Barber quarters, V-nickel, IHC and a very oddly slabbed Kennedy half.... Seems like there was something else..... I was plugging some empty holes in Dansco’s and was able to return my gratitude by making purchases from most of the generous fellows..... It was a great day for us both. Little fellow just brought me some of his trick or treat stash and that tells me he had a great day!
