I've reviewed what I consider a type set. Originally I based part of it on the NGC gold short type set (1834-1933). But when trying to finalize the set I looked at the Coin World listing augmented by the Red Book. Turns out the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles (1840-1907) come in two varieties -- or three if you count the "CAL" variety too: -- Old Reverse (1840-1861) -- New Reverse (1859-1907) I checked what I already had; turns out it is the New Reverse (1882 in my case). So my Old Reverse variety arrived today. 1855 PCGS AU-55 Hmmmm, got my image sizes different.
I do the same thing with other types (draped bust cents, capped bust halves, etc). I find putting a type set together far more enjoyable since I get to define what constitutes a "type."
