    I picked up this coin last week for $28.00 on eBay.

    It is a 3/4 follis, or 30 nummi of Tiberius II (578-582 CE), minted in Nicomedia between 579-582 CE, Officina B. It is quite crude, but with good detail.

    As far as I know this particular denomination did not continue beyond Tiberius II's reign. Perhaps it was not popular due to its close similarity to the follis of 40 nummi?

    Weight: 14.0 grams

    Very interesting coin - thanks for sharing. XXX nummi of Tiberius Constantine. I can see CON in the obverse legend. He was considered a "good" emperor, but had to deal with unrest of the Avars who besieged Sirmium and an eastern war against the Persians. As he approached death in 582 he passed on the Imperial authority to the general Maurice.

    Thank you for the bio.

    I've had some luck, in the past, with bulk lots of Byzantine coins out of auction - a real potluck sometimes.

    @robinjojo , that's a nice XXX coin.

    The XXX denomination was also issued by Phocas, 602-610:

    PhocasXXX.jpg

    Phocas (= Focas) 602-610
    30-28 mm. 8.91 grams.
    Struck year 6 = 607/8
    Sear 641, officina not listed for year 6
    DO 34 has the year 7 with officina Є, but not year 6.
    MIBEC 63, unlisted officina for year 6. It has it for year 7.

    That's right. Phocas also issued 30 nummi coins.

    I forgot...I guess my mind was not focused on Phocas!
