My eldest son bought this coin for me after Christmas and it just arrived today after being held up in US Customs in New York for nearly a month. My son bought this after Christmas since he has no idea of my collecting interest and had to consult me during my visit with him and his wife over the holidays. He did well finding an interesting reverse. I believe this is a fouree based on the copper appearance on the obverse, but the reverse shows no sign of any base metal poking through. M. VOLTEIUS M.F. ROMAN REPUBLIC; GENS VOLTEIA AR Fouree Denarius OBVERSE: Laureate & helmeted bust of Attis right; shield behind REVERSE: Cybele seated right in chariot drawn by two lions; OQ above, M Volteivs below Rome 78BC 2.9g, 18mm Cr385/4; Syd 777, Volteia 4 BTW, I told him not to spend more than $25 (he and his wife are underpaid educators in Virginia). He disobeyed me and spent $28.50 which includes shipping.
Great coin Bing! He did great for $28.50 and it was probably less than $25.00 before shipping and handling
You're probably right, the cheap skate!!! Both my sons are good "kids". They're both older than many of the regular members that post to the Ancients section. My wife did a good job raising them while I was off playing soldier.
two words... "lion chariot" and one more word... "win" I guess that's what the kids say these days. It's great Christmas present bing.
That's a great Christmas tale and a very cool RR Fouree (congrats, Chief!!) Yup, apparently your kid did a superb job of finding you the perfect present ... ... my "kids" bought me underpants for Christmas (*sigh*)
=> yes, my dogs ........ come to think of it, that's pretty good for dogs, eh? (gee, I guess I owe Larry an apology)
I am glad you finally got it, Bing. And of course, being a present from your son it has a special meaning. My own sons never give me any presents, but oh boy do they expect them. On another note, I am astounded to learn how long clearance through US customs can take - I thought it was purely a German thing. I once had to wait 6 weeks for customs here to notify me they had a package for me, and then they wanted 19% import tax on it!
