Hiya guys, I just finished the fall theatre season last week, so I decided to do a bit of photo editing as a way of burning some of this "spare" time I seem to have all of a sudden. Now, I'm prrrrrretty sure I have some of the details wrong on this (Does the AE # refer to diameter? ), but I can edit those later. Macedonian AE, Interregnum period (288-77 B.C.). According to Wikipedia, the Interregnum period occurred early in the Hellenistic era, after the extremely unpopular Demetrius I was forced to leave the country because of pressure from the forces of Pyrrhus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus. It ended when his son, Antigonus II, regained the throne and established the Antigonid dynasty. I would give you an overview of the characters, but Demetrius's bio is...not CT appropriate... So, have some links! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demetrius_I_of_Macedon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antigonus_II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonian_Empire
It's a very nice coin, and yes, AE means bronze, AE15 stands for a bronze of 15mm diameter, so listing the diameter separately is redundant. I like this type very much, and it's quite common, but I just haven't gotten around to collecting one yet.
Your new coin is in pretty good condition. Congrats. Here is my meager copy: MACEDONIAN KINGDOM AE16 OBVERSE: Macedonian sheild with thunderbolt at center. REVERSE: B-A either side of Macedonian helmet Macedonia Interregnum Early 288-277 BC 16mm, 4.46g Sear 6782
Actually, I lied. I do have one of these, but it was struck for Alexander by the Cypriot king Nikokreon. It's not wonderful...
