I just won this coin from eBay. It is a scarcer type for Maxentius and was issued for his quinquennalia (5 year anniversary). This coin was sold in a CNG auction in 2019 (eAuction 453 #626) and I won it on eBay for about half the hammer of the CNG auction. The hidden bit, which wasn't mentioned in the eBay auction, was that this coin is also a plate coin in Le monnayage de Maxence by Vincent Drost (122c/17). Maxentius A.D. 310- 311 Half follis 20mm 2.9g MAXENTIVS P F AVG; Helmeted and cuirassed bust left, holding spear over right shoulder and shield on left. VICTORIA AETERNA AVG N; Victory seated right, inscribing VOT/ X on shield set on pillar; to left, captive seated left, head right. In ex. RQ RIC VI Rome 232; Drost 122c/17 Ex Ron Bude
I have had several of these, but being a plate coin in a reference I actually use quite a bit is neat. I also have the plain obverse type below-- Maxentius A.D. 310-311 Half follis 19x21mm 3.0g MAXENTI-VS P F AVG; laureate head right. VICTORIA AETERNA AVG N; Victory standing right, left foot on base of cippus supporting shield inscribing VOT X, captive seated left. In ex. RP RIC VI Rome 227
That is a great type! I would love to have spotted that one, but I don't have Drost so I wouldn't have known what made it extra special. Sometimes a coin "belongs" with the person who recognizes what's great about it (at least long enough to make sure the next person will also know). This one found a proper home!
