Wow! Take a look at this proposed (small) dollar coin design that was submitted in 1977. Gorgeous. Similar to the Liberty with Cap on Pole cent design in the 1700's ... I also love the reverse. I think the designer was Frank Gasparro. Instead congress was swayed by politics and the womens lib movement and adapted the Susan B Anthony obverse and copied the reverse from the large Eisenhower dollar. I wish they would resurrect this old previously rejected design ... it's gorgeous. Even I would collect it -- and i dont collect modern coins. Imagine this coin stuck as a silver cameo proof!
The obverse design was originally conceived by Benjamin Franklin for the Libertas Americana medal, and Augustin Dupre was given the task of engraving it. Below is a restrike of that medal. Chris
But...........much more widely collected. BTW, having a "golden" colored dollar was also thrown into this mix but that got nixed as well. IMO, they really screwed it up!
There's lots of coins like that one that were proposed but rejected. This was always my choice for the golden dollar -
That sure would have been nice! At least they might not have changed it after 9 years like they did the Sac. Chris
Honestly never seen that before, that would have been amazing. I like the Sac look but this would have been better. These are the designs I want back on coins! Damn presidents
Personally, I hope they don't ever use that saggy cap in a design again. Symbolism aside, it looks pretty lame and out of place to me.
the 1977 liberty dollar pattern was actually minted. Unfortunately, they were all melted down. They should have given a few to the Smithsonian.
Although I do like the Sac dollar, I agree that the one you show would have been a much better choice. The flowing hair design on the obverse is a winner. TC
the 1977 flowing hair dollar is just like the 1964 peace dollar. thousands minted, (supposedly) all melted...
